Pupils from Small Heath Leadership Academy are celebrating their GCSE results, after overcoming a year of pandemic disruption.

Pupils and staff from across the school faced a difficult year as they worked to counter disruption caused by lockdown, periods of self-isolation and illness. Exams were cancelled this summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Exam boards issued qualifications based on grades determined by teachers following assessments completed over a period of time.

Despite these challenges, teachers say that pupils at the Academy battled to secure excellent results by working with extraordinary commitment throughout the year.

Today, pupils are celebrating their achievements as they collect their results and take their next steps towards their careers of choice.

Sumayyah Miah scooped four grade 9s and 3 grade 8s in her excellent set of results. Teachers say that Sumayyah demonstrated great resilience throughout her studies and was determined to achieve grade 9s across multiple subjects. The diligent pupil is looking to continue her studies in science and eventually pursue Dentistry at university and beyond.

Shaan Shahid also achieved an excellent set of results, which included three grade 9s, two grade 8s and a grade 7. He is looking to go to university following his A-levels and take up a career in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) related field eventually.

Adil Hossain’s results included a grade 9, two grade 8s and 3 grade 7s. Teachers say that Adil worked with diligence and remained focused throughout his studies. The dedicated pupil is looking to develop his talent in the field of mathematics.

Enass Al-Ani, Principal at Small Heath Leadership Academy, praised pupils for their exceptional efforts throughout a period of pandemic related disruption.

She said: “This year, pupils have had to work with an exceptional level of commitment and perseverance to continue to make progress with their studies.

“As a school, we have all been amazed by our pupils’ hard work and we would like to congratulate all our pupils who are collecting results today.

“I would also like to say thank you to all our incredible parents and staff who have gone the extra mile to support our pupils during these difficult times.”

Small Heath Leadership Academy is a secondary school for pupils aged 11 – 16 in Birmingham. The school joined Star Academies, one of the UK’s leading multi-academy trusts, in January 2018.
