• 47% of students awarded grades 9-5 in English & Maths, up from 39% in 2019.

Small Heath Leadership Academy is celebrating outstanding achievements on GCSE results day, after students sat exams for the first time since 2019.

Students have valiantly overcome two years of disruption to their education, following periods of lockdowns, self-isolation and illness. Despite these unprecedented challenges, students excelled in this year’s exams with the academy securing significant increases in the number of students achieving a ‘strong pass’ (grade 9 to 5) in English and Maths, which rose from 39% in 2019 to 47% this year.

Staff and parents have today been celebrating with students at the academy as they progress onto the next stage of their education or training.

2022 has provided a double celebration for the academy, after it was judged as ‘good’ overall earlier this year in its first Ofsted inspection since becoming an academy.

High-achiever Nasima Begum was awarded the top grade of 9 in seven subjects, with two grade 8s. Alongside her exceptional academic efforts, she still found time to mentor younger students during her time at the academy. Nasima will be continuing her studies at Camp Hill Grammar School.

Another high achieving student at the academy was Amnah Khan, who was awarded an outstanding six grade 9s.

Enass Al-Ani, Principal at Small Heath Leadership Academy, said:

“I don’t think we should forget that our students, along with all those receiving their results around the country today, have faced more disruption and uncertainty than any previous cohort of students.

“From school closures, to self-isolation and illness, they have conducted themselves admirably and have always put their education first, and demonstrated incredible resilience. Equally, our staff have been unwavering in their support, despite the unknown territory that the pandemic presented them with.

“I would also like to thank the parents who have also had so much to overcome and have always given their children the best support. I hope they are as proud of their young people as we are today.”
